About Washington Field Hockey Association

The Washington Field Hockey Association, ("WFHA"), is a non-profit organization that promotes field hockey playing, coaching, and umpiring opportunities in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. WFHA has been supporting field hockey in the Washington DC area since 1924, which was shortly after USFHA created the Southeast Field Hockey Association and made Washington, D.C one of the local Associations therein.

Membership

Membership is open to men and women of all ages and skill levels and is divided into two categories: Club and Association.

Club is a more casual level of play. This is for players looking to have a good time playing field hockey one day a week. Players are welcome at all skill levels. Some players have played in college, some only in high school. Others are getting back into the game after a number of years.

Association is a more skilled and committed level of play. The association team represents WFHA at Southeast Field Hockey Association ("SEFHA") league games and tournaments. Players are provided multiple playing opportunities during the weekend. These players tend to have more extensive field hockey experience, most having played in college. Play is fast paced and competitive.

New Players

It's easy to become a member of the Washington Field Hockey Association! Just follow these easy steps:

During the off-season, (spring & summer)...

  1. Fill out our new player survey. The New Player Survey will help us learn a little bit more about you. We'll also add you to our mailing list and send you our new Fall Newsletter, which will probably be available in late-July/early-August.
  2. Explore our website and learn more about us! As a new player, make sure you check out the
Off-Season page about where we might be playing.
Fall 2008 Newsletter to get an idea about how our fall season typically runs.
Frequently Asked Questions page to see if a question you have has already been answered.

During the Fall or Winter you can join the Washington Field Hockey Association.

  1. Club or Association. Figure out whether you want to join WFHA as a "Club" or "Association" member.
    • If you are joining as a Club member, come to the first day of Club at the Academy of the Holy Cross to sign up. The first official day of Club is usually the weekend after Labor Day. To learn more about club, visit our Club page.
    • If you are joining as Association, you can either come to the first day of club or the first day of Association practice at Oakton High School to sign up. The first official day of Association practice is also usually the first weekend after Labor Day. To learn more about Association, visit our Association page.
    • If you're interested in Association, but are a bit "intimidated", come out to Club on Saturday and register at Club level since, for insurance purposes, you have to be a member to play. Then, come to the first Association practice on Sunday and see what they think, and then make their final decision in the next week or so.
  2. Pay your dues. Refer to the latest Fall newsletter on the front page to get an idea of what our dues will be for the season.
  3. Join USFHA. Because we are an affiliate of the United States Field Hockey Association, you will be asked to join USFHA by filling out this application and signing the Waiver and Release of Liability form, if you aren't already a member.

Still have a question about becoming a member? If so, contact our President, or our Club Vice President.

If you are trying to obtain inclement weather information, call the WFHA hotline at 703-642-WFHA (9342). The hotline also has information on club and association playing opportunities.
